Gum Disease
Periodontal (Gum) disease is one of the most common ailments know to
man. Many studies show that over 80% of all adults have
gum disease. It is a chronic,
infectious, slow moving infection that brings about the destruction of the
gums and bone around the tooth and is
the major cause of tooth loss in adults.

Periodontal disease is caused when bacteria in the plaque and tartar
form an infection in the gums around the neck of a tooth.
Tartar
deposits have bacteria in them which infect the gums. The first
stage of this is called Gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen,
inflamed gums that bleed when you brush or floss your teeth.
Many people experience bad breath and/or an unpleasant taste in their mouths
as well. When untreated, Gingivitis progresses to Periodontitis, a much
more serious form of the disease where periodontal pockets are
formed, causing a space between the teeth and the gums and destroying the supporting
bone structure. Without treatment, this infection becomes severe and the
pockets deepen, which can make the teeth lose and require
extraction.
The secret to a healthy mouth is removal of 100% of all bacterial
plaque from all surfaces of all the teeth at least once a day. This requires involvement/participation from
the patient. Medical/Dental science has discovered
many
links between gum disease and systemic medical diseases, so
treatment of your gum disease is about more than just keeping your
teeth....it's about saving your life!
